People of SCION - Jerry Bueno

Here at SCION, we are proud of all our employees for all they do behind the scenes, so we thought it was time to put them in the spotlight. This series does exactly that; you get a sneak peek into what drives, excites and enamours our team. We hope you enjoy it!

Let’s get into it…

Meet Jerry Bueno, US Sales Manager here at SCION Instruments!

What made you choose SCION, and how long have you been part of the team?

I’ve been a dedicated member of the SCION team for about eight years now, and the reason I initially chose and continue to choose SCION is multifaceted. What truly stands out is the culture: it’s a very close-knit, niche team, and I genuinely love my colleagues like family. That collaborative, supportive atmosphere is something you don’t find everywhere.

And of course, professionally, our product range is exceptional. We have the distinct advantage of carrying the legendary Varian legacy in our instrumentation. That combination of great people and great products made SCION the clear choice for me.

What has been your favourite work trip with SCION so far?

When it comes to travel, I always embrace any trip to California or to the Northwest. Those regions offer incredible landscapes and vibrant professional environments. Combining the necessity of business travel with the opportunity to visit such beautiful parts of the United States makes those trips particularly enjoyable and memorable.

What does a typical day or week in your role look like?

As the US Sales Manager, my weeks are dynamic and heavily focused on customer interaction and strategic outreach. I generally have key internal and planning meetings scheduled on Tuesday, ensuring alignment across the team.

However, after that, my week shifts gears entirely. I’ll typically have appointments with customers anywhere in the South or across the country, depending on where the needs are greatest. My primary focus is to travel to them directly, understand their analytical requirements, and ultimately try to sell instruments. That is, after all, the end goal: connecting our cutting-edge technology with the customers who need it most.

We know you’re busy at work, but what do you do in your spare time?

My spare time is dominated by my passion for competitive activities! I’m a dedicated competitive endurance athlete, regularly competing in both gravel cycling races and ultra-running events. It’s a great way to challenge myself mentally and physically.

And happily, some of this rigorous training and competing is a shared pursuit, as it involves running with my wife. It’s rewarding to share such a challenging and enjoyable hobby with her.

What was your first ever job?

My journey in the instrumentation world started right at the beginning of my career. My first job was hands-on, building mass specs for a company in Austin, Texas. That experience provided a fundamental understanding of the technology that still informs my work today.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

If I could go anywhere on the globe, I would choose New Zealand!
