How Standard Method GC Systems from SCION can work for the Oil & Gas market

SCION has numerous standard, pre-configured systems available to meet a wide variety of applications, for example DHA, SIMDIST, RGA as examples. If you have an analytical challenge to solve then our long experience in designing, configuring and manufacturing complete systems, with all their analytical benefits, ensures you get the solution that’s right for you.

Irrespective if for hydrocarbon processing, refinery product control, natural gas monitoring, SCION has the Standard Method GC System to meet your requirements – all based on more than 35 years of experience and satisfied users. Each Standard Method GC System can be calibrated and tested to the specified analytical methods as well as follow up calculations such as boiling points (simulated distillation), etc.

Simulated Distillation Analysis (SIMDIST)

The 8300GC / 8500 GC SIMDIST systems are turnkey solutions based on industry standard methods.  They provide true boiling point distribution of a hydrocarbon sample.

These Standard Method GC Systems will be factory tested and are controlled by the advanced CompassCDS Workstation software package using preprogrammed settings.

Detailed Hydrocarbon Analysis (DHA)

The DHA Standard Method GC System is designed to characterize the complete hydrocarbon sample composition, by individual component separation in a single analysis. This system provides quantitative determination of all target hydrocarbon groups (n-paraffins, i-paraffins, olefins, naphthenes, polynaphthenes, aromatics and for some methods oxygenates, including carbon number distribution of each group.

Our DHA Standard Method GC Systems can be configured to conform to the following methods:

Fast DHA to D86

The DHA to D86 system is designed to predict True boiling Point (TBP) curves for light hydrocarbon streams (D86 groups 1 and 2) with final boiling point <250°C. The system combines ultrafast DHA with Fugacity Film modelling software, and provides TBP data in <6 minutes run time / <15 mins cycle time.

This Standard Method GC System will be completely tuned, tested and documented prior to shipment

Natural Gas Analysis

Natural Gas Analysis A – used for the determination of O2, N2, CH4, CO2, and C2 and C3 hydrocarbons.

Natural Gas Analysis B – Molecular sieve column for the determination of O2, N2, without oven coolant, and a short/long DC 200/500 for the hydrocarbons and CO2.

Natural Gas Analysis B with H2/He Channel – Uses simultaneous injection into two columns : Molecular sieve column for the determination of O2, N2, without oven coolant, and a short/long DC 200/500 for the hydrocarbons and CO2.

Natural Gas Analysis C – Used for the determination of O2, N2, CH4, CO2, and H2S.

Natural Gas Analysis C with H2/He Channel – Used for the determination of O2, N2, CH4, CO2, and H2S.

Refinery Gas Analysis (RGA)

SCION offers two types of RGA Standard Method GC Systems to accommodate the broadest range of analyses.

Standard RGA

A three channel 8500 GC system with a multi-valve design using both capillary and packed columns to give highly robust and reliable analysis even with larger gas volumes. This Standard Method GC System is suited for all types of refinery gases, including stack gases, flame gases and reformer gases.

Rapid RGA

A three channel 8500GC system that utilizes a multi-valve design in which the packed columns used in the Standard RGA are replaced by micropacked columns in both the hydrogen and permanent gas channels, giving faster analysis, or higher throughput.  It is a standard turnkey solution for refinery gas analysis within 5 minutes.

The 8500 GC Rapid RGA system separates saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbon isomers from C1 through C5 plus composite C6+, permanent gases like hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide.

Permanent Gases, CO/CO2 & Light Hydrocarbons

Permanent Gases Analysis

This Standard Method GC System is suited for the analysis of all gases up to Propane in various matrices including refinery gas, natural gas, reformer gas, burner gas, exhaust gas.  By using highly advanced columns this Standard Method GC System separates Oxygen, Nitrogen, Carbon monoxide, Carbon dioxide, Methane, Hydrogen-sulfide and the C2 isomers: Ethane, Ethylene and Acetylene in various matrices.

Light Hydrocarbon Analysis

This Standard Method GC System is suited for the analysis of hydrocarbon impurities in gaseous samples like chemical or technical grade ethylene, propylene and butylene. The system is also suited for all types of refinery gases, including stack gases, flame gases and reformer gases.

Transformer Gas Analysis (TOGA)

There are three options available:

  • TOGA Based on D3612-A (Gas Extraction)
    • This system is configured to conform to the ASTM D-3612 procedure
  • TOGA D3612-B (Stripper Column)
    • This system is configured to conform to the ASTM D-3612 procedure B, using Stripper Column.
  • TOGA D3612-C (Headspace)
    • This system is configured to conform to the ASTM D-3612 procedure C, using Headspace (HS sampler needs ordering separately).

Dual Channel Standard Method GC System

The dual channel Standard Method GC System, is a combination of two single channel standard systems in a single configured 8500-GC. The specification of the different channels, is the same as mentioned in the Data Sheets of the (Single) Standard Method GC System.

The dual systems are easy to operate and fully automated. Operational parameters, including gas flows, are factory tuned and set. The complete chromatographic method is stored. Electronic Flow Control is implemented.

ASTM D2162 Analysis

ASTM D2163 is the standard test method for the Determination of Hydrocarbons in LPG and Propane/Propene Mixtures. Each 8300 GC is configured with a S/SL Injector, FID Detector and either a Liquid Sampling Valve or a Gas Sampling Valve.

Trace Impurity Gas Analysis

Trace impurity gas analysis is based on detection with the Pulse Discharge Helium Ionization Detector (PDHID). This detector requires high purity Helium.
