THC Blood Test Using GC - Optimal Quantification of THC In Blood

Hemp and marijuana have gained increasing popularity due to their legalization in multiple countries. The number of cannabis users worldwide is now estimated to exceed 200 million individuals. However, it is important to note that driving under the influence of cannabis remains illegal. The consumption of cannabis can lead to various side effects, including euphoria, hallucinations, relaxation, and even sedation.

To ensure road safety, law enforcement officers have the authority to administer screening tests for cannabinoids in saliva if they suspect a person is driving under the influence. A positive result from the screening test must be confirmed through the analysis of a blood sample using Gas Chromatography, which detects the presence and levels of the drug.

The primary active ingredient in cannabis is delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC). Following ingestion, Δ9-THC undergoes metabolism and transforms into the inactive ingredient Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid (THCA). The quantification of THCA can indicate the long-term use of the drug.

It is worth noting that the limits for drug detection are established by government regulations and may vary from country to country. For instance, in the United Kingdom and Canada, the limit is set at 2ng/mL, while in France, it is 1ng/mL. These limits serve as benchmarks to determine whether an individual has exceeded the permissible levels of cannabis in their system.

A THC blood test for the analysis of cannabinoids from biological matrices is made easy with the SCION GC-MS. The highly sensitive and robust instrument has exceptional limit of detection for both Δ9-THC and THCA. With an LOD of 0.2ng/mL and LOQ of 0.5ng/mL, for Δ9-THC, these limits exceed the requirements specified by the laws in UK, Canada, and France. Additionally, the cannabinoid analyser is capable of detecting THCA at concentrations as low as 2.5ng/mL, with excellent repeatability for both cannabinoids.
