Many VOCs are man-made chemicals that are used and produced in different industries.<\/p>\n<p>VOCs can be\u00a0 harmful to the human health, the effects can be direct or can be build up in the body to\u00a0 cause long-term health problems. Because of these health effects it is important to monitor the VOCs. SCION Instruments offers a perfect solution to measure these components even on ppt levels.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Figure-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-47021 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Figure-1-174x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"174\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Figure-1-174x300.png 174w, https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Figure-1.png 299w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 174px) 100vw, 174px\" \/><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-45165 size-medium alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/8900TQ_combinedGC8300-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/8900TQ_combinedGC8300-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/8900TQ_combinedGC8300-1019x1024.jpg 1019w, https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/8900TQ_combinedGC8300-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/8900TQ_combinedGC8300-1529x1536.jpg 1529w, https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/8900TQ_combinedGC8300-2039x2048.jpg 2039w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Figure 1.\u00a0SCION<\/strong><b> VERSA\u00a0 Headspace Sampler together with the SCION Instruments 8300 GC platform in combination with to 8700 SQ-MS. <\/b><\/p>\n<h2>Experimental conditions<\/h2>\n<p>The Versa Automated Headspace Analyzer in conjunction with a GC\/MS system was used for this analysis.\u00a0 The parameters for these systems are displayed in table 1.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Table-1a2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-47199 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Table-1a2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"465\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Table-1a2.png 465w, https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Table-1a2-300x165.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 465px) 100vw, 465px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Table-1b.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-47051 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Table-1b.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"467\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Table-1b.png 467w, https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Table-1b-300x145.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 467px) 100vw, 467px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Table-1c.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-47057 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Table-1c.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"466\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Table-1c.png 466w, https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Table-1c-300x136.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 466px) 100vw, 466px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Table 1. <\/b><b>Instrumentation operating conditions. <\/b><\/p>\n<h2>Standard and sample preparations<\/h2>\n<p>Stock standards from a 524.3 and a 502.2 commercially available mix were prepared in methanol at 5 and 50 parts per million (ppm).\u00a0 These stock standards were used to prepare working standards in distilled water for the calibration curve and MDL study.\u00a0 The compound list is presented in Table 3.<\/p>\n<p>An internal standard solution containing 4 ppm of fluorobenzene, 4-bromofluorobenzene and 1,2-dichlorobenzene-d4 were prepared in methanol.\u00a0 5 \u00b5L of this standard was added to all samples and blanks for a final concentration of 2.0 ppb.<\/p>\n<p>The headspace samples consisted of 10 mL of distilled water or the appropriate working standard.<\/p>\n<h2>Calibration curves and MDL<\/h2>\n<p>The stock standard above was used to make a calibration curve from 0.020 to 20 ppb.\u00a0 MDL samples were prepared at .050 and 0.100 ppb. Figure 2 is the total SIM chromatogram of a 0.05 ppb standard which is typically the lower detection limit standard used in scanning GC\/MS. Figure 3 is a SIM chromatogram of the 0.020 ppb standard.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Figure-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-47027 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Figure-2-1024x524.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Figure-2-1024x524.png 1024w, https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Figure-2-300x154.png 300w, https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Figure-2-768x393.png 768w, https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Figure-2.png 1074w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Figure 2: Chromatogram of the Summed Specific Ions of the 0.5 ppb Standard<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Figure-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-47033 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Figure-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"975\" height=\"548\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Figure-3.png 975w, https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Figure-3-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/scioninstruments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Figure-3-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 975px) 100vw, 975px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Figure 3: Chromatogram of the Summed Specific Ions of the 0.020 ppb Standard.\u00a0 The specific ion mass 75 m\/z of cis-1,3-dichloropropene is inserted to display its peak area.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The data passed the current requirements of both methods with the majority detectable below the 0.020 ppb standard.\u00a0 The calibration curve from 0.020 ppb to 20 ppb for most of the compounds was &lt;10% RSD, and the correlation coefficient was &gt;0.995 for all compounds except 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane. 1,2-Dibromo-3-chloropropane and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane were not detectable below 0.100 ppb with this method making their calibration range from 0.100 ppb to 20 ppb.<\/p>\n<p>Table 2 presents the calibration data including %RSD for both the response factors Rf and using n=7 replicate samples for MDLs, correlation coefficients, and calculated MDLs. Styrene, toluene and methylene chloride are laboratory background contaminants.<\/p>\n<p>1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane did not pass the %RSD or correlation coefficient requirements when tested as an unmodified water sample. The newly released EPA Method 524.3 uses maleic acid as a dechlorinating agent and ascorbic acid as a preservative. 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane did pass these requirements when tested with the addition of these acids as a matrix modifying solution.<\/p>\n<p>Minimum detection limits calculated\u00a0 from 0.050 ppb standards were below 0.020 ppb for all of the compounds except 1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane.
