THC Potency Testing Cannabis Using HPLC

Test for THC Potency with SCION

When it comes to THC potency testing, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) is the method of choice. What sets HPLC  apart is its ability to deliver accurate analysis without the need for heating procedures. One of the benefits of using HPLC over GC to test for THC potency is the ability to discriminate between the acidic and non acidic forms of certain cannabinoids (CBD, CBG and 9-THC).

When using GC, the heat of the injector causes the acidic forms to degrade into their nonacidic counterparts, this can be avoided by derivatizing the compounds, but this requires lengthy additional sample preparation. Whilst many regulatory bodies allow for the reporting of the acidic and non acidic forms as a summation this is not always the case.

Using HPLC for a THC potency test avoids this issue and allows for quantification of each component separately without the requirement of further sample preparation.

This not only saves time but also ensures the integrity of the cannabis sample. In fact, HPLC has also gained a reputation for providing superior accuracy compared to alternative methods. If precision and reliability are what you seek in your potency testing, HPLC is the go-to technique that won’t disappoint.
