Having an interest in Chemistry throughout his time at school Kees attended a local Technical College to further his passion. Now working with SCION Instruments as a Site Coordinator and Team leader in Operations, we caught up with Kees to find out a little bit more about his work within the company and what inspired him to pursue a career within the industry.

What or who inspired you to pursue a scientific lead career?

As soon as I studied Chemistry at high school I realised that it was (and is) something that had my interest. After high school I decided to study Chemistry at the local technical college. Once school was finished and the real work in the laboratory started the real learning began.

Early in my career the Chemistry tasks were combined with some organisational work, and up until today that remained. Although the Chemistry is not hands on anymore, the organisational parts have grown significantly.

Can you describe a typical day?

I don’t know if there’s such a thing as a typical day, because each day is completely different. There are only a few fixed items in the week and the rest of the day is a combination of production related work (technical issues, material and staff), facilities and organisational work.

What do you like most about your job?

Working with the Goes team – we really have a great team of dedicated people. That combined with a new building that has all the facilities needed and with my interest in technique, chemistry and organisation makes this job very enjoyable.

What is the one piece of advice you would give to someone considering a career in science?

Follow your heart and do what you love! Keep on learning, especially after your further education is finished.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

As I am also a professional musician I spend quite a lot of my time composing and arranging music for all kinds of orchestras, bands and choirs. Besides that I like to run and walk – enjoying the nature in the area around my village together with my family. I also enjoy photography. Therefore most of the time I combine it with my love for nature which is great fun.
